Independent Analysis — 2026

The same 20 vendors. Two completely different stories.

Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ vs. Critical Capabilities™ for Analytics & BI Platforms

Gartner's Magic Quadrant position and Critical Capabilities scores produce radically different rankings for the same 20 BI vendors. This report shows exactly where they diverge — and what it means for a BI market in transition.

Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant for Analytics & BI Platforms and its Critical Capabilities report cover the same 20 vendors — Microsoft, Salesforce (Tableau), Google, ServiceNow (Pyramid), ThoughtSpot, Databricks, Qlik, Oracle, Amazon Web Services, SAP, Strategy, Alibaba Cloud, SAS, Domo, GoodData.AI, IBM, Zoho, Tellius, Sigma, and Incorta — but score them very differently. This report normalizes both into a single 1–20 index per report and lines the two rankings up side by side.

Gartner Magic Quadrant vs. Critical Capabilities 2026 cover slide: MQ rank advantage for Microsoft (#1 to #17), SAP (#10 to #19), and Google (#3 to #11) versus CC rank advantage for Tellius (#18 to #3), GoodData.AI (#15 to #4), and Incorta (#20 to #9)

Magic Quadrant vs. Critical Capabilities: what's the difference?

The Magic Quadrant evaluates a vendor's market position — ability to execute and completeness of vision, incorporating product strategy, sales, customer experience, and organizational viability. Critical Capabilities scores the product itself against specific use cases: Data Storytelling, Perceptive Analytics, Governance, and Composability. One is a market ranking. The other isn't.

How to read this analysis: the Gartner Magic Quadrant measures market position (ability to execute and completeness of vision) while Critical Capabilities measures product performance across Data Storytelling, Perceptive Analytics, Governance, and Composability

The 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant ranking, all 20 BI vendors

Both Magic Quadrant axes normalized and averaged into a single 1–20 rank. Microsoft, Salesforce (Tableau), and Google lead; Sigma and Incorta sit at the bottom.

The 2026 Gartner Critical Capabilities ranking, all 20 BI vendors

Gartner's 1.0–5.0 scores across all four Critical Capabilities use cases, averaged into a single rank. ServiceNow (Pyramid), ThoughtSpot, and Tellius lead; SAS and SAP sit at the bottom.

Where product capability and market position diverge

Tellius, GoodData.AI, and Incorta rank far higher on Critical Capabilities than on the Magic Quadrant. Microsoft, SAP, and Google run the opposite direction — stronger market position than technical score.

Chart comparing product strength versus market position: Tellius (+15), GoodData.AI (+11), Incorta (+11), and Sigma (+7) rank higher in Critical Capabilities than the Magic Quadrant, while Microsoft (-16), SAP (-9), Google (-8), and Qlik (-8) rank higher in the Magic Quadrant than in Critical Capabilities

How all 20 vendors move between the two rankings

Nine vendors stay within three positions between the two reports. Eleven move four spots or more — the clearest sign that market position and product capability are pulling apart.

What the Magic Quadrant–Critical Capabilities gap means for the BI market

Four takeaways: the market is changing faster than buyers are, this echoes BI's shift to self-service dashboards in the early 2010s, platform consolidation is still winning for now, and ServiceNow, Salesforce, and Databricks lead the mega-vendors while ThoughtSpot leads the independents.

Four conclusions on the Gartner Magic Quadrant-Critical Capabilities gap: the market is changing faster than buyers, echoes of BI's early-2010s shift to self-service dashboards, platform consolidation still winning for now, and the best-positioned vendors — ServiceNow, Salesforce, and Databricks among mega-vendors, ThoughtSpot leading independents alongside GoodData, Tellius, Incorta, and Sigma Methodology and sources: independent Magic Quadrant and Critical Capabilities rankings calculated by Ryan Dolley from Gartner's published 2026 research for Analytics & BI Platforms
